We take great pride in contributing to nearly a hundred local organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs, Urban League and Big Brothers Big Sisters each year. We’ve given tens of millions of dollars in cash and in-kind contributions to charitable organizations like these over the years, focusing our dollars on initiatives that enhance the education of our kids and promote diversity. With nearly 1,000 employees serving the area, we also take pride in giving back through volunteerism. We look for opportunities to involve our employees in community projects. Helping out at after-school programs and mentoring during the school-day have long been employee favorites. Cox has been recognized with a number of national and local awards for our commitment to customers, community and diversity. Some recent honors include Operator of the Year by Multichannel News, J.D. SUMMER 2010 7 to pull colors into new pillows and a throw on the sofa. Other tips involving accessories: Update your lamps – pick shades or bases with bright colors that engage and draw your eyes. Add an interesting sculpture or piece of colored glass to your cocktail table or mantle – it can become a focal point of the room. An area rug adds color and pattern to the oor, creating warmth and atmosphere. A leaner mirror placed opposite a window with a view can open a room and make it appear larger. A beautiful oral or a touch of greenery adds warmth to any space. Utilizing any of these tips allows you the opportunity to add your per- sonality to an otherwise neutral room of furniture. Accessories are a smaller purchase that can change the look of any room quickly and effectively. Add An Artistic Accent A painted chest or antique armoire is a fashion statement when it is added to most furniture styles. These should not match your existing décor, but instead stand out as an artistic expression complementing your other furnishings. An example of this would be adding a Ningbo (Asian) antique painted piece to a very clean contemporary room. The result will be a unique fashion state- ment that will be charming, as well as create conversation among your friends! Explore your creative side…ask a creative friend to join you. With a good plan, you can buy as you have the money available and be assured it will all come together when complete. Photos and information provided by American Furniture Warehouse. Revamp Your Space Consider These Simple Design Tips Furnishing your new home is an adventure in fashion – where the trends change swiftly and dramatically, same as selecting your wardrobe is centered around current fashion trends. Unfortunately, you cannot change out all of your furniture to keep up with constantly changing fashion trends or to update looks you have grown tired of. You can still give your new home a fresh feel, bring in the latest color trends and make your home an exciting retreat without stressing your bank account! Consider these simple designing tips: Rearrange Plan one room at a time and complete it before you move to the next. Stand in the middle of the room and think about how you will use the room. Is there enough space to arrange the furniture to best suit how you plan to use the room Other simple rearrangement ideas include moving some furniture away from the walls – this adds a unique touch and changes the room feel and dimensions. If you are not pleased with the overall layout or feel of your room, you may also consider exchang- ing pieces from one room to another. Just because you bought a new lamp intended for your bedroom doesn’t mean it is not better suited for your living room. Add New Accessories Accessories are an affordable way to simply update a room, or completely Accessories are a smaller purchase that can change the look of any room quickly and effectively revamp the feel of a space. A new piece of art hung on a focal wall can add drama and introduce a new color scheme. Washington Branch 444-4849 Willa Cather Branch 444-4851 Winter Preparedness Most Omaha residents know that winter is cold, sometimes snowy, and always unpredict- able. City forces are capable of handling most snow events and keeping the roads open around the city. Sometimes drivers are wise to take alter- nate routes to avoid steep streets or take more heavily traveled and better-treated streets. Driving When city streets are snow or ice covered, the capacity of the entire street network is reduced. People drive slower. Drivers are urged to eliminate unnecessary and discretionary trips at these times. Consolidate trips. Take care of as many errands as you can when you go out. Phone Directories Dex .www.dexknows.com Automobile Registration Visit the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicle Web site for more information about renewing online at clickdmv.ne.gov/regrenew You can renew online unless one of the fol- lowing applies: you have changes to the information on your registration, the vehicle you wish to renew is a truck that has a registered weight of more than 27 ton, or your most current registration has been expired for one year or more. Proof of insurance (must be original docu- ment) that shows the name of insurance com- pany, the name of the insured, the Vehicle Identi cation Number (VIN), Year, Make, and Model of the vehicle, and the expiration date of the insurance policy. 14 WELCOME HOME MAGAZINE NEWCOMER AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION Don’t let critical household supplies dwindle. Keep frozen or canned foods handy so that you always have a couple days worth of good, nourishing meals. Keep at least one week’s medications on hand. Do not wait until the last day to ll regular prescriptions. Keep a week’s supply of infants’ and children’s items. An emergency supply of diapers, baby food, formula, etc. should be kept in reserve. Lastly, be exible. Consider changing plans and canceling events if conditions warrant. Road-worthy Vehicles Another important consideration is making sure your vehicles are road worthy during the winter. Make sure your vehicle has good tires. Tires with worn, thin tread should be replaced. In ate tires to the recommended pressure. Expect slick conditions during and after snow events. Respect other drivers. Drivers should try to move with rest of the traf c and not aggres- sively change lanes and pass. Use sandbags or other ballast in rear wheel drive pickup trucks. Keep windshield washer uid in your vehicle. Have your antifreeze checked. Keep a small snow shovel in your trunk. Snow Removal Overnights lows may dip below freezing this time of year. That can cause frost on bridges in the early morning hours. Motorists should remain alert for this condition. Always be aware of road conditions and be prepared to slow down if water, snow or ice are present.
