If you’re interested in sports, Las Vegas is the place to be. Here are
highlights of sports in Las Vegas.
You can’t talk about sports in Las Vegas without first talking about UNLV. UNLV
Football's home is Sam Boyd Stadium. They play in the Mountain West Conference,
which includes BYU, Colorado State and Utah.
The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels basket-ball team plays an exciting brand of bas-ketball
under head coach Lon Kruger. They play all of their home games at the luxurious
Thomas and Mack Center.
For more information on these programs, or any of the other 15 Division I sports
at UNLV, call 739-FANS or log onto www.unlvrebels.com.
Check out the hard-hitting, fast-paced action of Las Vegas Wranglers
Professional Hockey at the State-Of-The-Art Orleans Arena. The Las Vegas
Wranglers regular season runs November to April. They are the minor league
affiliate of the NHL Calgary Flames. Call 471-7825 for more information or visit
www.lasvegaswranglers.com.
The Arena Football League’s Las Vegas Gladiators don their armor from the end of
Febuary to June in the Thomas & Mack Center. They battle against teams owned by
the likes of John Elway (Colorado Crush) and Jon Bon Jovi (Philadelphia Soul) in
quest of reaching the Arena Bowl. You can purchase tickets by calling the
Gladiators front office at 731-4977 or by logging onto lvgladiators.com.
Las Vegas has a very successful professional minor league baseball team called
the Las Vegas 51s. They play in the Pacific Coast League as a AAA affiliate of
the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their home is Cashman Field, seating 9,334, which
boasts of a state-or-the-art misting system to keep fans cool during the games.
The Las Vegas 51s home season runs April through September. You can purchase
tickets through the Cashman Field ticket office, Ticket Master, or by calling
the LV 51s at 798-7825.
Las Vegas is the undisputed boxing capital of the world. Major fights take place
all the time at the larger hotels and more minor events take place at venues all
over town.
The National Finals Rodeo is held every year before a sellout-crowd of 172,000
for 10 days in December at the Thomas and Mack Center. The world’s best cowboys
and cowgirls compete for over $4 million dollars in prize money in this world
championship of professional rodeos. For more information call 739-FANS.
The 130,000 seat Las Vegas Motor Speedway is considered one of the world’s
fastest tracks of its size. The 1.5 mile super speedway holds Nascar events in
this state-or-the-art facility. Located just northeast of Nellis Air Force Base,
this “diamond in the desert” hosts the annual UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400,
entertaining 250,000 auto racing fans. There’s also the drag racing facility,
which hosts the NHRA Spring & Fall Las Vegas Nationals. For more information
call 644-4444.
