Welcome to your new home in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The
following information should be helpful whether you are a newcomer or simply
moving within the area. The advertisers in this magazine all provide products
and services that you may need soon after moving. Keep this reference guide in a
handy place so you can refer to it often.
Drivers License
New Residents:
Nevada drivers licenses and plates must be obtained within 30 days after
residency has been established. New residents will have to apply at a full
service office. You will need:
n Proof of name and age (birth certificate, drivers license, passport)
n Turn in your out-of-state license
n Proof of Social Security number (S. S. card, or payroll document)
n Pass a vision test
n Drivers under the age of 25 must pass a written test. Drivers age 25 and older
who have no special restrictions need not take a written test.
Nevada Change of Address:
You must change your address within 10 days of moving. You can do it by mail.

Auto Emissions Inspections
Most vehicles need a Nevada emission vehicle inspection report. Call
702-486-4981 to see what is required for your vehicle. Inspections can be
obtained at any of the authorized service stations or quotmotive repair
facilities throughout the city.
Auto Registration, Plates, Tags
New Residents:
New residents will have to register their vehicle within 60 days of moving,
providing the out of state registration does not expire sooner. You will need to
bring the following:
n Current registration certificate.
n A valid emissions vehicle inspection report if needed.
n Vehicle title, unless held by lien holder.
n Nevada evidence of insurance card.
n Verification of vehicle ID, which can be issued at DMV offices.
n Out of state license plates.
Automobile Insurance
It is a Nevada law that drivers must have state-approved auto insurance. The
proof of insurance card must be in the vehicle at all times.

It is a Nevada State law that children under the age of five, or less than 40
lbs. must be secured in a child safety seat.

Local bus service is provided by the Citizens AreaTransit (CAT). The county-wide
bus service runs 20 hrs. a day on residential routes and 24 hrs. a day along the

Voter Registration
n To vote in any election, you must be registered at your current residence
address 30 days prior to the election.
n If you move within Clark County, you must notify the Election Department in
writing. Call the Election Department for a Change of Address card.
n Residents can also register to vote or change an address at any Department of
Motor Vehicles.
n Nevada is a closed primary state, which means that you cannot vote for
partisan offices in a primary election unless you are registered with that
political party.
In Clark County any eligible voter can vote by mail during the period for early
voting. Mail votes on election day are allowed only in the case of emergency.

Pets
Dogs living in Clark County must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies every
two years; cats every year. All dogs must be restrained on a leash or be in
control by the owner at all times. Cats must also be restrained on a leash
within the city. For more information, call one of the following animal control
