Seniors Find Many Options in Las Vegas
by Lynne Montel Sloane
Las Vegas has become a mecca for senior retirees for a variety of reasons. Climate, low tax base (no state income tax), low utility rates and plenty of new communities that cater specifically to the rapidly swelling sen-ior population. Many local casinos also target the senior market with everything from low cost food specials, to a dizzying array of special events such as ballroom dancing -— many even offer free shuttle bus service to the hotel/casinos from local retirement communities. There has probably never been a better time to retire to this desert oasis with its warm winter sun and multitude of golf courses, parks and entertainment options. Since almost everyone who now lives in Las Vegas has moved here from another part of the country, seniors find it is very easy to make new friends.
Despite the tourist’s perception of Las Vegas, it really is much like any other city its size — well almost. Las Vegas is open 24 hours a day with live entertainment and a plethora of dining options. You have probably already discovered that you can do your grocery shopping and play the slots in most grocery stores. But, once you get past the glamour, glitz and neon of the “Strip” and Downtown, senior newcomers will find a lot of wonderful surprises.
Whether you’ve chosen to live in a retirement community or not, Las Vegas offers such a broad spectrum of activities, that it’s almost impossible to be bored. Short day trips by car can sweep you to the cool breezes and mountain air of Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon. The grandeur of Red Rock Canyon is just minutes from town.
As the senior population has expanded, so have the clubs and organization available to the city’s seniors — from Chess to quilting, screen writing to line dancing — there is a club out there that involves your favorite hobby, interest of support. The Las Vegas senior centers offer a variety of recreational facilities such as swimming pools, gymnasiums, libraries and exercise rooms. They also offer workshops, art classes, computer training, and even a weekly bridge game!
