Saving for a Rainless Day
As spring weather descends upon Denver and our rivers and streams swell with
snowmelt, it’s easy to forget that Colorado has a semi-arid climate with limited
water supplies. Denver’s annual average precipitation of only 16 inches drives
the need for wise use of water.
It’s easy to use only what you need. To save water outdoors, follow these easy
tips:
· Use the chart at right to ensure you are giving your lawn only what it needs.
· Prevent water runoff from pooling or flowing across the ground or into any
drainage way such as gutters, streets, alleys, or storm drains.
· Apply water intended for irrigation to landscaped areas and not hard surfaces
like streets, parking lots, sidewalks or driveways.
· Repair leaking or damaged sprinkler heads or system leaks.
· Avoid watering landscaped areas on rainy or windy days.
Note: Penalties for water waste are always in effect for Denver Water customers.
The first violation gets a warning, the second costs $50, the third costs $100,
and continued violations may result in suspension of service.
